Gently W-dipping slope of brown clay soil over rocky volcanic bedrock and rubble. Open Juniperus deppeana-Juniperus monosperma-Pinus edulis grassland with understory of Bouteloua gracilis, Gutierrezia sarothrae, Artemisia frigida, Elymus elymoides. Volcanic rock cover and lichens ca 40%, veg cover 50-70%.
Stems brittle, cylindrical. Plants less than 8" tall, forming mats up to 2 ft across. Petals yellowish, closed. Fruit dry, yellow, not especially spiny. Common. Growth form a response to grazing/trampling.
