Found in almost any bottom conditions, but grows best in rock/sand bottoms in 0-1.5 meters of water. Common assoc. (Potamogeton vaseyi) Vasey's pondweed, (Vallisneria americana) wild celery, (Eleodea canadensis) common waterweed, (Najas flexilis) bushy pondweed.
Rare in north bays were [where] it occurred in a few widely scattered sandy areas. Locally common in sandy stretches throughout the south basin where its coiled seeds and curled leaves make it easy to identify.
