Frequent but not abundant (ca. 100 individuals seen) cespitose shrub to 3dm tall; spines gray to black, at least when young, and variable with respect to length; just now coming into bud; this particular individual with numerous stems forming a large mound, spines pink-gray; prints; n=22 during meiosis of microgametogenesis from material collected 7 March 2003 from individual in cultivation at Chino Valley, Arizona; flowers (3) photographed and pressed 28 April 2005; one flower with pale yellow stamens (older) and two flowers with magenta stamens.
