Habitat:
Stabilized sand dune community in open Pinus edulis - Juniperus osteosperma pygmy forest; associates include Artemisia filifolia, Epehdra cutleri, Poliomintha incana, Ambrosia acanthacarpa, Dithyrea wislizenii, Chondrosum gracile, Muhlenbergia pungens, Gutierrezia sarothrae, Hymenopappus filifolius; short woody trunk topped by grayish foliage; heads drooping; pistillate and staminate flowers present; very common.
