Clumping perennial herb, with 50 or more stems arising from crown. Stems gray, 1-1.25 m. Inflorescences axially, typically 3 (2-4) per stem; calyx greenish, reflexing; pedicels puberulent. Leaves linear, deciduous; generally about 10 nodes below inflorescence.
